Universal Rhythm Dance Academy

We’re over on Nns Road in Somwar Peth. If you hear music coming from a building around there, it’s probably us. The academy isn’t a massive theater. It’s a space with some mirrors on the walls and floors that have seen a lot of shoes over the years. We started this because we liked to dance and wanted a place to do it without it being too formal or scary for beginners. It gets pretty sweaty in here during the summer months, and the fans never seem to be enough, but nobody seems to mind once the music starts. We don’t have a receptionist in a suit or a shiny lobby. You just come in, put your bag in a corner, and get to it. We spend a lot of time cleaning the floors because of all the dust that comes in from the road. The rhythm is what matters, whether someone is just starting out or has been here for years. Somwar Peth is a lively neighborhood, so we fit right in with the noise and the movement. Sometimes the sound system acts up, or we forget to change a lightbulb right away. It’s a human place. We just want people to have a spot where they can move around and learn a few steps. It’s our little corner of the world and we’re happy with it. Most nights we are here until late, just keeping the beat going for everyone.
