Running Tanaya Dairy involves a lot of early mornings and heavy lifting. We operate around Pimple Saudagar and Nalasopara, so we are often on the move. The floor at the dairy is almost always wet because we are constantly washing the floors and the equipment. It smells like fresh milk and cleaning supplies most of the time. We have a couple of benches where we sit for a few minutes when there’s a break in the work, but they aren't very comfortable. Pimple Saudagar can get quite crowded, and navigating the narrow lanes with our supplies is always a bit of a challenge.
In Nalasopara, the pace is a bit different, but the work remains the same. We check the seals on the containers and make sure everything is stored exactly where it should be. Tanaya Dairy isn't a high-tech operation; we use a lot of handwritten ledgers and old-fashioned scales. Sometimes the pen runs out of ink right when we're in the middle of a long list, which is frustrating. We have a small fan that we move from room to room depending on where we are working. It’s a bit of a struggle during the monsoon when the rain comes down hard on the roof, making it hard to hear anything else. We just keep going because people expect their deliveries on time. It’s a basic, honest way to make a living. We have a small cabinet where we keep our spare boots.
