Soham Dairy is based in Hadapsar, specifically in Sun Valley at Ramdevnagar Cross Road, building C-9. My day starts while most people are still sleeping, usually around four in the morning. That’s when the milk arrives and we have to get everything ready. It’s a small shop, mostly filled with refrigerators for the milk, curd, and paneer. The air always smells a bit like cold milk and sweets. We have a lot of regular families from the Sun Valley apartments who come down every morning. I know exactly who wants the full-cream packets and who is looking for the low-fat ones. It’s a lot of lifting heavy crates, so it keeps me fit. During the festivals, we are extra busy because everyone wants extra milk for making sweets at home. It gets quite hectic then, with people lining up out the door. My brother helps me out in the evenings so I can get a bit of rest. We don’t have any big signs or posters, just the name on the board. The fridge makes a constant humming sound that I don’t even notice anymore. It’s a simple business, really. We just provide what people need for their daily tea and meals. I like the morning quiet before the city really wakes up. By the time the neighbors are out and about, we’ve already been working for hours, making sure there is fresh stock waiting for them.
