Shahid Motor Driving Schools is located at Door No. 4, right near the Maha Nagar Bank in Nigdi, Pune. The postcode is 411044 if you’re looking it up on a map. Being in Maharashtra, we get all kinds of weather, but mostly we’re just out on the roads regardless of the sun or rain. The office is really small, mostly just a place to keep the car keys, some old ledgers, and the registration forms for the new students. Most of our time is spent in the cars. We’ve got a couple of hatchbacks with the extra pedals on the passenger side so I can stop the car if things go wrong. It’s funny because you can always tell a new student by how they hold the steering wheel so tight their knuckles go white. We spend our days driving around the streets of Nigdi, trying to teach people how to park without hitting the curb or the parked bikes. The traffic near the bank can get a bit messy, so it’s a good place for learners to practice their patience and clutch control. We don't have a fancy website or any big slogans to attract people. We just sit in the passenger seat and try to stay calm while someone learns how to navigate the road. Sometimes we stop for a quick tea break between the lessons. It’s a lot of sitting and watching the side mirrors. By the time we finish at the end of the day, my legs are tired. It’s a simple business.
