We’ve been running Sagar Dairy at Shukrawar Peth 1381 for a long time now. The day starts way before the sun is up, usually around four in the morning when the milk trucks arrive. It’s cold and quiet then, which is actually my favorite part of the day. We have to move the heavy cans and get the milk ready for the morning rush. By six, people start showing up with their own containers or asking for packets of curd and paneer. The shop is small and the floor is always a bit wet from the cleaning we do constantly. We don’t have any fancy signs or marketing; people just know where we are. My family helps out, so you’ll usually see my son or my brother behind the counter. We make our own yogurt in the back, and sometimes it sells out faster than we expect. The fridge hums loudly all day long, and the smell of fresh milk is something you never really lose. It’s a lot of work, and you don’t really get holidays off because the cows don’t stop producing milk. We’ve seen the neighborhood change a lot over the years, but our little corner remains pretty much the same. We just try to keep things clean and make sure nobody has to wait too long in the morning line. It’s a simple life, mostly built around the morning and evening milk deliveries.
