Pune is a city where you really need your own wheels if you want to get anywhere on time. We set up S K Ladies Two Wheeler Driving School in Rasta Peth to help women get comfortable on scooters. Our office is in the Mayur Dawlat Apartment which is quite easy to find if you know where the Power House is. It's also right opposite the Ayyata Mandir. We see a lot of people walking by there every morning. Most of the ladies who come to us are a bit scared of the traffic at first. Pune roads are not easy especially during the rush hours near the temple. We usually start in the quiet lanes before moving out to the main roads. I have been doing this for a long time and I’ve seen all kinds of learners. Some pick it up in two days and others take two weeks but it doesn’t matter as long as they get there in the end. The apartment block is an older one but it stays cool in the summer which is nice for when we take breaks. There isn't a big staff or a fancy reception desk or anything like that here. It is just us and the bikes parked outside on the street. A lot of time is spent talking about brakes and balance and how to not panic. Sometimes sitting on the steps of the apartment is the only way to wait for the next student to arrive. It’s a simple life but helping someone ride their first scooter is a good way to spend the day for us.
