Rocky Poonawalas Dance Academy

Our academy is over in Shivaji Nagar on S V Road. We are up on the 3rd floor of the Raghuvansh Apartment building. It’s right near Amboli 5 and Canal Road. Being on the third floor means you get a bit of a climb before you even start dancing, which we tell people is just a good warm-up. The studio has a lot of windows, so you can see the activity on the street and the canal area while we practice. It’s an older building, so it has that specific smell of concrete and age, but we’ve made the inside our own. We have mirrors and a sound system that gets the job done. The space feels lived-in. It’s not one of those sterile, brand-new places. We’ve got marks on the walls and floors from years of classes. People come here from all over the local area. Some take the bus, some walk. We spend a lot of time repeating the same counts and making sure the rhythm is right. It gets sweaty and loud, especially in the summer months. There’s no big corporate office behind us, just us running the classes and keeping the schedule together. Sometimes the elevator in the building acts up, so the stairs are a safer bet. It’s just a place where we teach people to move and have a decent time doing it without any extra complications.
