We have our music classes set up in the Katraj area. It’s a place where local kids and adults come when they want to learn an instrument or work on their singing. The rooms aren't soundproofed perfectly, so you can often hear a mix of different scales and songs echoing through the halls during the evening. We started this academy because there weren't many places around here for people to just practice and learn music without it being a big, formal thing. We have some basic instruments like harmoniums and tablas, and a few benches for the students to use. Katraj is a busy part of the city, but once you step inside, it’s all about the notes and the rhythm. The floor is usually covered with mats where the students sit during their lessons. It’s a very traditional way of learning that we’ve stuck with. We don't follow a strict corporate schedule; things are a bit more relaxed here. Sometimes a lesson goes a bit long if we’re having a good session, and other times we just spend the hour talking about the history of a particular raga. It’s a small community of music lovers. We’ve had many students stay with us for years, growing up as they move from basic lessons to more difficult pieces. It’s a simple life focused on teaching and keeping the local musical traditions alive in our own small way.
