Mauli Maik Dairy is tucked away in Kothrud Mograpada Lane 115/1. It is a quiet lane most of the time, except for the very early hours of the morning when the milk arrives. I am usually up and at the shop while most people are still sleeping. The first thing I do is check the refrigerators to make sure the temperature stayed where it should be overnight. The floor is made of rough cement, which is good because it gets wet quite often when we are cleaning the crates. I spend a lot of time counting packets and setting them aside for the regular customers who come in early. The address at 115/1 isn't hard to find, but you have to know which turn to take off the main road. I have a small light over the front door that stays on until the sun comes up. Sometimes a stray dog will sit outside waiting for a bit of spilled milk, and I usually just leave it be. The work is mostly lifting heavy crates and dealing with the dampness of the cold storage. My jacket is usually a bit damp by mid-morning. People from the nearby apartments come down in their slippers to pick up their daily supply, and we usually exchange a quick word about the weather before they head back up. By noon, the main rush is over and I can finally sit down.
