Viman Nagar is a busy neighborhood, and we are right in the thick of it. Maruti Vegetable is where we spend our whole day, starting long before the sun even comes up. The morning air is cold when we start unloading the crates from the trucks. We spend hours sorting through tomatoes, spinach, and potatoes to make sure the bad ones get tossed out. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and moving wooden boxes around. The floor is usually a bit damp from the water we spray to keep the greens looking okay. It’s a simple setup. We don't have fancy baskets or refrigerated displays. Everything is just laid out so people can pick what they need. Customers come in with their cloth bags, and we spend time weighing things on the scale. Sometimes we have a quick chat about the price of onions or how the rains are affecting the crops. It’s a noisy, lively place, especially in the evenings when everyone is getting home from work. My apron is usually covered in some dirt by noon, but that’s just the nature of selling vegetables. We don’t try to be anything other than a local vegetable stall. We just want to have enough stock for the people of Viman Nagar every day of the week. There is no magic to it, just keeping the produce fresh and the shop open.
