Kalashri Sangeet Vidyalaya

This music school is located on Nikol Gam Road in Sangavi. The pin code is 41290. It’s not a very fancy place, just a few rooms where we keep the harmoniums and sitars. The walls are a bit thin, so you can hear the singing from the next room over. We have mats on the floor for the students to sit on. It’s a bit of a walk from the main road, but people find us. We spend our evenings teaching the local kids their scales. The instruments are old and have a lot of character. We have to tune them quite often because of the weather. Sometimes the tea lady comes by and we take a short break. We don't have a lot of decorations, just a few pictures of old musicians. The door has a bit of a squeak that we haven't fixed yet. It’s mostly local families who bring their children here. We don't use any fancy apps or computers to teach, just our ears and voices. The Nikol Gam Road area is usually busy, so there is always some background noise from the traffic. We just try to focus on the notes. It’s a simple life running a sangeet vidyalaya. We’ve been here for years and the routine is always the same. We open the shutters, dust the instruments, and wait for the music to start. It is just a part of the daily life in Sangavi.
