The Institute of Hotel Management here in Hajipur is a busy place. We are right near Ramashish Chowk, which is a major landmark in this part of Vaishali, Bihar. Being run by the Ministry of Tourism means we follow a certain way of doing things, but on the ground, it’s just us staff and the students trying to make it through the semester. The building is fairly large and you can’t really miss it if you’re coming from the chowk. It’s noisy outside with all the buses and rickshaws, but inside it’s all about the kitchens and the classrooms. We spend a lot of time making sure everything is ready for the practicals. It’s not a glamorous life, despite what people think about the hotel industry. There’s a lot of cleaning, a lot of prep work, and a lot of standing on your feet. We have kids coming from all over the state to learn here. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to wait for the generator, but that’s just part of being in Hajipur. We don't have a lot of fancy words to describe what we do. We just teach the basics and try to get everyone through their exams. It’s a government-run spot, so the paperwork is never-ending, but we’re used to it by now. The tea at the gate is actually pretty good if you’re ever around.
