If you go to House Number 130 in the Tola area of Bairiya, you will find our office. Bairiya Farmers Producer Company Limited was started by a group of us who live right here in Pashchim Champaran. We did not want to keep working for someone else far away, so we banded together to do our own thing. It is a collective, really. We share the equipment and the work. Living in this part of Bihar means you have to be tough and work together to get things done. The office is not much, just a room where we keep our files and meet up after the day's work is finished. We talk about seed prices, the rain, and who is going to take the harvest to the market. It is a lot of talking sometimes. Everyone has an opinion and they aren't afraid to say it. But that is how a real community works. We are not some polished outfit from the city. We have dirt under our fingernails and we know the land because we walk on it every single day. Our families have been in Bairiya for generations. We just figured that by forming this company, we could get a better handle on our own lives. It is not always smooth sailing, and we have our disagreements about how to run things. But at the end of the day, we are all neighbors. That is why we are here.
