About Mahalakshmi Steel Centre – Metals & Minerals in North Delhi
Sadar Bazar is always a squeeze. Getting to Deputy Ganj 4759 in the morning is a real mission with all the rickshaws and handcarts blocking the way. Mahalakshmi Steel Centre is right in the middle of that noise. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and moving things around. We spend the day shifting steel pieces around the shop floor. It’s a bit cramped because there’s so much stock piled up near the entrance, but we know where every single piece is hidden. The air smells like metal and old brick buildings. People come in and out all day asking for specific sizes or just checking prices. We don't have a big fancy showroom with air conditioning, just the shop floor and the inventory. Some days it’s so loud you have to yell to be heard over the street traffic outside. Deputy Ganj has a lot of history and you can see it in the high ceilings of the shop. We’ve had the same neighbors for years, and we usually share a pot of tea around four o'clock. Lunch usually happens sitting on a small wooden stool between stacks of pipes or steel sheets. It's honest work and it keeps us busy from dawn to dusk. We don't do much advertising because the shop has been at 4759 for so long that people just know we're there. When the monsoon rain comes, the street outside gets very messy, but the work never stops. We just pull the shutters down a bit and keep going until it's time to go home.
