You’ll find K. V. Spices (India) Pvt. Ltd. at 526, Lahori Gate, up on the first floor. Being in this part of Delhi means you are always surrounded by the smells of the market. Some days it’s turmeric, other days it’s heavy chili that makes everyone sneeze. Our office is above the main street, so we get to hear all the shouting and the carts rolling by on the cobblestones. The stairs up to our place are narrow and a bit steep, but we don’t mind. Inside, there’s not a lot of fluff. We have wooden desks that have been around for years and shelves that hold samples and records. It’s a busy atmosphere because people are always coming in and out with orders. We don't have air conditioning that works perfectly, so we keep the windows open when we can, even if the dust comes in. It’s a grounded kind of place. We handle things manually a lot of the time, checking the bags and making sure the labels are right. The light in the afternoon gets a bit dim, but we have enough lamps to keep going until late. Most of us have been working here together for a while, so we don’t need to say much to get the job done. It’s a local business in a local market, and we wouldn’t really want to be anywhere else. The noise is just part of the day for us.
