You have to walk up to the first floor to find us at 163 Katranawab. Chandni Chowk is always a mess of people and carts, so getting up the stairs feels like a bit of a relief from the crowd. The hallway is narrow and the stairs are a little uneven, but it’s been our home for a long time. Once you’re inside, the noise from the street below turns into a dull hum. We have a few desks pushed against the walls and some heavy safes that probably haven't moved in twenty years. The air is thick with the smell of the market outside—spices, exhaust, and street food. Most of our day is spent at those desks, weighing things or checking stones under a lamp. It isn't a place with marble floors or fancy curtains. It’s just a workspace where we get things done. We drink a lot of coffee and talk about the day’s prices or whatever is happening in the neighborhood. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait for the generator to kick in, which is just part of living in this part of Delhi. We know the other shopkeepers around here, and we often shout greetings across the alleyway. It is a busy, cramped way to work, but it’s what we know. We just keep the records straight and wait for the sun to go down so we can head home.
