Guru Nanak Enterprises

Sadar Bazar is a place where you can barely move most of the time. Our shop, Guru Nanak Enterprises, is at 2361/1 in Teliwara. It is a very old building with narrow stairs and high ceilings. Every morning, we have to clear the entrance because the street gets so packed with carts and people. We deal with a lot of heavy bags and boxes. The walls are lined with shelves that go all the way up, and we use these rickety ladders to reach the top. It’s always a bit dark inside because the buildings are so close together, so we keep the tube lights on all day. The noise from the market outside never really stops. You hear people haggling and the wheels of the handcarts on the stone road. We spend our time counting stock and writing out bills by hand. There is a lot of dust that comes in from the street, so we are always wiping things down. Most of the customers have been coming to us for years. They know where to find us in the maze of Teliwara. We drink a lot of tea to keep going through the day. By the time we pull down the shutters, the whole market is still buzzing. It’s a tiring place to work, but it’s where we’ve always been. We just keep the inventory moving and try to stay out of the way of the crowds.
