Sardar Silk House

If you have ever been to 469 in Chandni Chowk, you know how hectic things get. Sardar Silk House is right in the middle of all that noise and the smell of street food. We spend our days surrounded by rolls of silk and different fabrics piled up almost to the ceiling. It is a bit of a maze inside here. Most of the time, we are just helping people find the right shade or weight of cloth while trying to ignore the chaos of the rickshaws outside. The shop has been here for a long time and it shows in the wooden counters and the way the floors have worn down. It is not a polished showroom by any means. It gets crowded and the air can feel a bit heavy when the fans are just moving the heat around. We spend a lot of time folding and unfolding things because someone always wants to see just one more pattern. Dealing with silk is delicate work but the environment here is anything but delicate. We usually have tea delivered in small glasses twice a day which is the only time we really sit down. It is just a regular old shop where we try to keep track of what is in stock. There are no fancy systems here, just us and the fabric. We keep at it because it is what we know.
