About National Handicrafts Design Gallery & Earth Treasures Museum – Art & Craft in New Delhi
We are located right here on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, which stays pretty busy most days. The gallery is filled with all sorts of things people have made by hand, from little wooden figures to big woven pieces. We spend a lot of time just moving things around or dusting the shelves because these items tend to sit for a while. It’s a quiet place mostly, unless a big group of students comes through to look at the Earth Treasures section. Those rocks and minerals have been in the cases for quite some time now. We usually start the morning by unlocking the heavy doors and checking if any of the lights have burned out overnight. It’s a lot of space to manage, and some corners are a bit dimmer than others, but that’s just how the building is. The street outside is always noisy with cars and people heading to the other shops nearby, but once you step inside, it changes. We don’t really do much fancy stuff here. We just make sure the displays are somewhat neat and that the doors stay open during the hours we’re supposed to be here. Sometimes people ask a lot of questions about where a specific pot came from, and we try to remember what the tags say. It’s a steady kind of work, surrounded by a lot of old things and natural stones that don’t change much from year to year.
