We’ve been at Vanan Kovil Thottam on Udumalai Road for a long time now. Making hollow bricks is just what we do every day. It’s a lot of cement and sand and the machines make quite a bit of noise while we work. My clothes are usually covered in grey dust by the time noon rolls around. Local people come by looking for blocks for their compound walls or small house projects. Sometimes the weather makes things difficult because the bricks won't dry fast enough if it is cloudy. We just stack them up in the yard and wait. It isn’t fancy work here at Sri Sakthi Murugan Hollow Bricks Company, but it keeps us all busy. We mostly deal with local builders who already know exactly where to find us. You just turn off the main road and drive into the thottam. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to stop the mixer, which is frustrating. That is just how it goes here. We don't have a big office or anything, just the open yard and the equipment. It gets very hot in the afternoons, so we try to start very early in the morning. Most of our days are spent checking the mix and loading up trucks. It’s heavy work, but we have gotten used to it over the years. We don't do any advertising because everyone around here knows the spot. It is just simple, honest work.
