Working at Vibhush Narayan Dairy Farm in Lower Parel means starting the day when most people are still asleep. It’s a very early routine. The milk comes in and we have to get it ready for the morning rush. Lower Parel has changed a lot over the years with all the big buildings coming up, but we are still here doing the same thing. It’s a lot of cleaning, mostly. You can’t have a dairy without constant scrubbing. We handle the milk, the curd, and sometimes some butter. It’s not a glamorous job. Your hands are always wet and the floor is usually slippery. We don’t have a website or anything like that. People just walk up to the counter. Some of our customers have been coming to us since I was a kid. It’s a local spot. Sometimes the machines act up and we have to fix them on the fly. You learn how to handle the equipment after a few years. It’s a steady life. We don’t try to be anything we aren’t. It’s just fresh dairy products for the neighborhood. When the sun comes up, we’ve usually finished the bulk of the work. The traffic in this part of town gets really bad by mid-morning, so we try to get our deliveries out early. It’s just a small operation. Nothing too complicated about it. We just show up and do the work every day because people need their milk before breakfast starts.
