Our little shop, Uzma Bags, is tucked away in Byculla, over at the Gurukul building. If you’ve walked around here, you probably missed us the first time because we aren’t big on signs or bright lights. It’s mostly just the sound of the sewing machines going all day long. We have a couple of tables pushed together where we cut the fabric. Sometimes the patterns don’t line up right on the first try, so we have to start over. It gets a bit cramped when we have a lot of orders to finish, but we manage. Most of the people working here have lived in Byculla their whole lives. We know the local shopkeepers and the guys who deliver the materials. It’s a bit of a dusty place, to be honest. No matter how much we sweep, there’s always some lint or scrap of plastic under the chairs. We don't have a big team, just a few of us who know how to handle the heavy machines. In the afternoon, it gets pretty quiet inside, even with the city noise outside. We usually have a radio playing somewhere in the back to keep us going. We just make bags that people can actually use without them falling apart in a week. It isn’t glamorous work, but it pays the bills and keeps us busy. We like being in this part of town because everything we need is right around the corner.
