Our place is right in the middle of Dharavi, at Shop No. A/363 on the ground floor of a BMC Chawl. If you know Sant Kakkya Marg, you know how tight the lanes can get around Tadwadi Cross Road. It’s a busy, noisy part of Mumbai City, and we are right in the thick of it. Thorat Masala Food And Spices is a small operation. Space is tight in the chawl, so we have to be very organized with how we stack our bags of spices. There is always a lot of noise from the street outside—trucks, bikes, and people shouting—but you stop hearing it after a while. We don't have an air-conditioned office or soft chairs. It’s mostly just us on our feet, getting things ready for delivery. The Dhorwada area has its own rhythm, and we’ve become a part of it. We deal with spices and food items every single day, and the smell of turmeric and chili is always on our clothes. It’s hard work, and the rent in Mumbai is always a worry, but we manage. We aren't a big company with a lot of money; we’re just local people running a shop in a very crowded neighborhood. We don’t have a website or anything like that, we just work from the ground floor here and hope the weather stays clear for the deliveries. Most days are long, and the monsoon season makes things even harder, but we keep the shop open for business.
