Shridhar A Patil is located up on the 4th floor of the Pushpavati Building in Kalbadevi. If you know Kalbadevi, you know the streets are narrow and always packed with people moving goods back and forth. It’s the heart of the old trading district, and it feels that way every single day. Getting up to the 4th floor can be a bit of a workout when the elevator is busy, but once you’re up here, it’s a little quieter than the street level. Our office is filled with the smell of old paper and the hum of a few fans trying to keep the Mumbai humidity at bay. We’ve got large windows that look out over the rooftops of other old buildings. It’s a very traditional workspace. We don’t have modern cubicles or glass partitions. Instead, we have heavy wooden tables and cabinets that have been here for decades. Working in a place like Pushpavati Building means you are part of a long history of commerce in this city. We don’t do things in a flashy way. We just show up, handle our responsibilities, and talk to the people who climb those four floors to see us. Most of the folks who come by have been doing business with us for years. They know the shortcuts through the lanes to get here. It’s a tough place to work sometimes because of the heat and the crowds, but there’s an energy here you don’t find anywhere else.
