Our spot is Gala No 59/A inside the Kesa Kaka Compound in Goregaon East. If you are looking for us, we are right across from the Laghu Udyog Kendra. It is a very industrial area, so there is always the sound of trucks and heavy machinery moving around. Inside our gala, it’s mostly just stacks of steel and the smell of metal. It gets very hot during the summer months because of the tin roof, but we are used to it by now. We spend most of the day loading and unloading or cutting pieces to size. The floor is concrete and usually covered in a bit of dust and metal scraps. We have a small desk in the corner for the paperwork, but it’s mostly covered in oily handprints. It’s a loud place to work, and you have to watch your step with all the heavy beams around. We don't have any fancy air conditioning or a waiting room. Most people who come by are just here to pick something up or drop something off. We know the other guys in the compound, and we usually share a tea from the stall outside in the afternoon. It is hard work and physically draining, but it is what we do. The rain can be a problem because it gets really loud on the roof, making it hard to hear anything else, but we just keep working through it and get the orders ready as they come.
