Rohit Steel

Our place, Rohit Steel, is over at 14 Pandurang Bhavan on 2nd Carpenter Street. It’s a narrow street, so it’s hard to park anything close to the door. The building is older, and we are right there on the ground level. We spend a lot of time moving pieces of steel back and forth. It’s a small shop, so we have to be smart about how we stack things so we don't run out of room for ourselves. The light inside is a bit dim, but we have some overhead lamps that help us see. It’s usually just two or three of us working here on any given day. We handle the local walk-ins and the regular orders that come in over the phone. There’s a lot of heavy lifting involved, and the floor is pretty worn down from the years of dragging metal across it. We don't have a big corporate team or anyone in a suit. It’s just us in our work clothes, trying to keep things moving. Sometimes the neighborhood is so loud you can’t hear yourself think, but that’s just life on Carpenter Street. We keep a ledger to track everything because the computer is mostly for the taxes. It’s a very basic setup, but it works for what we need. We’ve been here a long time and plan to stay. We close up around seven usually and walk to the station. We’ve known the family that owns the building for years.
