If you find yourself on Charni Road near the Patel Hotel, you will see us at shop number 38 on the ground floor of the Alank building. It’s a bit of a gritty place, which makes sense since we work with steel. There’s usually a thin layer of metal dust on the surfaces and the smell of oil in the air. We deal with engineering parts and fabrication, so there’s always some kind of noise happening, whether it’s cutting or grinding. Being on the ground floor is lucky because moving heavy steel rods and sheets is a lot easier when you don’t have to worry about an elevator. The shop is packed with tools and machinery, and there isn't much room to walk around if you don't know the layout. We wear heavy boots and shirts that usually have a few grease stains by the end of the day. The traffic outside on Charni Road is constant, and the heat from the machines makes the shop feel a bit like an oven in the summer. We grab tea from the stall nearby and sit on whatever crates are empty. It’s hard work, and our hands are usually rough from handling the material. We aren’t trying to be fancy here. We just focus on getting the steel cut to the right size and making sure the engineering bits are done correctly for whoever needs them. It’s just us and the metal.
