Rajlaxmi Steel Corporation is on the first floor of the Rajendra Vihar Building. We are in Room 102. The address is in Mumbai, zip code 400004. It is an old building, the kind with narrow stairs and high ceilings. Being in the heart of Mumbai, it is always noisy outside with horns honking and people shouting. We have been here for a long time now. The office is full of old wooden furniture and heavy metal cabinets for all our files. We deal in steel, so there are always heavy samples sitting on the desks. It is a small team here, just a few of us. We spend the day checking prices and talking to people at the docks or the warehouses. Sometimes the monsoon rain leaks a little near the window, so we have to move the papers. We don't have a corporate culture or anything like that. We just come in, drink some chai, and get to work. It is a lot of back and forth on the phone. Most of our customers are old friends or people we have worked with for decades. We don't bother with fancy slogans. We just try to be honest about what we have in stock and what we can get. It is a busy, cramped, and lively place to work, but that is just how business is done in this part of town. We stay until the last call is finished each evening.
