Poonam Bag Works

Our place, Poonam Bag Works, is situated at 40 Hmt Road in the Mathikere area of Goregaon East. It is a bit of a trek to get here if you are coming from the main station, but it is a good spot for a workshop. We have been at this address for quite some time now, working on bags and other stitched goods. The building is an old one and it has its share of leaks when the monsoon hits, but we make do with plastic sheets and moving things around. We spend most of our time at the workbenches cutting leather or heavy cloth. It is hard work on the hands and my fingers are usually pretty sore by Friday night. We don't have a big team, just a few of us who know how to handle the heavy-duty machines. Sometimes we get big orders from local sellers and other times it is just a neighbor needing a zipper fixed. We don't mind either way. The Hmt Road area is always busy with small businesses like ours, so there is always someone to talk to or share a tea with during a break. We keep the doors open to let the air in while we work. It’s not a fancy showroom, just a place where things get made. We take our time with the stitching because if it’s not done right, the bag just falls apart, and we don't want that happening.
