If you come down to Reay Road, you’ll find us at Plot No. 54. The area is known as Lakdi Bunder, and it’s always been a hub for trade. Om Steel Traders has been operating out of Darukhana for a long time. It’s a rough part of town, very industrial and full of heavy metal and old ships being taken apart. Our yard is usually full of various steel pieces. We don’t have much in the way of a fancy office. Just a small cabin where we keep the ledger and take some tea. The ground is uneven and it gets muddy when it rains. Mazgaon has this smell of salt and rust that you never quite get out of your clothes. We deal with whatever stock comes in. Sometimes it's a lot, sometimes it's just a few bits. We don't have a website or anything like that. People just know where we are. They come by, look at what we have, and we settle on a price. It’s how business has been done here for generations. The trucks struggle to navigate the narrow lanes around Lakdi Bunder, but they always make it eventually. It’s a noisy, busy place but it’s where we work. We just show up every day, open the gates, and see who needs steel. It’s a straightforward way of living and we don't think much about it.
