About Odissi Classical Dance Centre – Art & Craft in Mumbai
Our place is located near August Kranti Maidan, right around the Grant Road area. It’s a bit of a walk from the station but not too bad. We’ve been teaching Odissi here for some time now. The room we use isn't huge, but it fits a decent sized group if we all stand in rows properly. We focus a lot on the chowk and tribhangi positions because those are the foundation. Sometimes the traffic outside gets a bit noisy, especially near Navrang Six Road, but once the music starts, you don't really notice it. We aren't a big commercial school. It’s more of a community thing where people who like the dance form gather. We have students of all ages, some kids and some older folks who just want to keep active. We usually have classes on the weekends and a few weekday evenings. We don't have a receptionist or anything like that. Usually, one of us is just there to open the door and start the practice. The floor is wooden, which is good for the feet. We try to keep the atmosphere relaxed so nobody feels too pressured, even though the dance itself is quite demanding. It’s just what we do here in this corner of the city, keeping the classical style alive day by day. Everyone helps out with tidying up after we finish. It feels more like a shared space than a formal school.
