Nippon Steel Industries

We operate out of the Ganesh Bhavan building on Girgaon Road, right at number 4. It is an old structure, but it has a lot of character. We are very close to the Alankar Theatre, which is the easiest landmark for anyone trying to find us. Dealing with steel is heavy and dirty work, so our space is not exactly a clean showroom. There are stacks of metal and pipes everywhere you look. My hands are usually stained with grease and iron dust by the time the lunch bell rings. We have been in this part of Girgaon for a long time and seen many shops come and go. The lanes around here are very narrow, so when a truck arrives with a delivery, it causes quite a stir with the local traffic. We have to be quick with the loading and unloading. It’s a lot of physical labor and keeping track of orders on paper pads. We don't use many computers here, mostly just doing things the old-fashioned way. The noise from the street is constant, with the theater crowds and the honking cars, but we have gotten used to it. Sometimes we sit on the wooden crates during our break and watch the people go by. It’s a tough business but it’s what we know. The walls of the office are covered in old ledgers and some pictures of the family. It feels like a second home to most of us.
