Neelkamal Steel Centre

Neelkamal Steel Centre is down in Khambatalane, part of the Mahyir Darsan Society. It’s on the ground floor, unit B/4. This is over on 8th Khetwadi Back Road. If you know the Khetwadi lanes, you know they are some of the narrowest in the city. We have been operating out of this small space for years. It’s mostly just shelves full of steel pieces and a small desk for me to sit at. Because it’s a residential society, we have to be a bit quiet with the heavy stuff sometimes. The neighbors are used to us by now though. It’s a very local operation. We don’t have a sales team or a fancy showroom. People just walk in off the street because they need a specific piece of steel for a repair or a small project. I spend a lot of time measuring things with a tape and cutting them to size. It’s a dusty job but I’ve always liked it. We don't really use computers for much, just a big notebook to keep track of who owes what. It’s a simple life. Sometimes the monsoon rains make the lane a bit difficult to navigate, but we stay open regardless. We aren’t trying to be the biggest steel place in town, just a reliable one for the people who live and work around here.
