Neelam Steel is tucked away at 184, 6th Kumbharwada Lane. If you’ve ever been to this part of Mumbai, you know how narrow the lanes are and how everything is packed together. It’s a tight squeeze for the handcarts and the bikes, but that’s just life here in 400004. Our shop is small but it’s full of whatever steel we can fit inside. We spend most of our time moving things around to find what a customer is looking for. It’s loud, it’s crowded, and it’s always moving. We don't have a receptionist or a waiting room. You just walk in and we talk across the counter. Sometimes the rain leaks in a bit during the monsoon, or the heat gets trapped in the lane, but we are used to it by now. We’ve been in Kumbharwada for years, and we know the other guys on the lane. It’s a community of metal traders and workers. There’s no room for fancy talk here; you either have the material or you don't. We try to keep a good stock of the common sizes, but sometimes we have to source things from nearby if someone needs a weird dimension. It’s a simple way of doing business that hasn't changed much over time. It’s honest, it’s local, and it keeps us busy from morning until the shops shut for the night.
