We are based at No. 11 in the New Mukadam Compound on Film City Road in Malad East. It’s a busy part of Mumbai, and there is always something going on outside our gate. The compound is shared with other businesses, so it’s a bit of a squeeze when everyone is trying to move materials at the same time. We focus on metal forming, which means there is a lot of pressing and shaping going on throughout the day. The sound of metal hitting metal is the background noise of our lives. It can be quite loud, so we are used to shouting a bit to be heard. We have different sizes of presses and tools scattered around the floor. Everything is covered in a light layer of industrial dust, no matter how much we clean. We don't have a big marketing budget or a sales team; we just take the orders that come in and make sure the parts are ready when they are supposed to be. Sometimes we have to stay late to finish a batch if a machine breaks down during the day. It’s a hard, practical job in a crowded city. We know the chai wallah outside by name, and he knows exactly how we like our tea. The traffic on Film City Road is always a mess, so we just stay inside and get the work done until it clears up.
