If you look for Mahalaxmi Steel, you will find us in Vikhroli West, right across from the Veer Hanuman Vyayam Shala. It is easy to find because you can usually hear the sound of steel hitting steel from the road. Being near the Kondhwa Budruk area means we see a lot of people heading to the gym while we are moving heavy pipes and sheets around. The dust from the road settles on everything, so we are always wiping down our desks and the equipment. It is heavy work and my back usually feels it by the end of the shift. We don’t have much in the way of a fancy showroom; it’s mostly just stacks of metal and the smell of industrial cutting oil. The sun hits the yard pretty hard in the middle of the day, making the steel hot to the touch, so we wear thick gloves most of the time. We have a small corner where we keep the paperwork, but most of the action happens out on the floor. People stop by to ask for specific lengths of rod or plate, and we just cut it to size and send them on their way. It’s a very straightforward operation without any fluff. We know our regulars and we know which trucks can fit into our loading area without hitting the gate. It is just about getting the metal out to the people who need it.
