Madhavji Mavji & Co. has its place on the ground floor at 206 Samuel Street. This part of the city is always moving, and being on the ground floor means we see all of it. The street is narrow and there are always handcarts and trucks trying to get past each other. We open up the doors early in the morning, and the first thing we do is get the fans going because it gets stuffy pretty fast. Our setup is very basic. We have some old desks and plenty of space for storing things that come in. There is no air conditioning, just the breeze from the street when the shutters are up. People come in and out all day with various slips of paper and orders. We have a small corner where we keep the water pot and some glasses for anyone who stops by. Samuel Street is known for this kind of business, and we have been a part of it for a long time. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we are usually too busy to worry about that. Most of our work is done by hand or on a simple computer. We don't have a fancy corporate structure. It is just a few of us making sure everything is accounted for. Sometimes the noise from the street is so loud we have to shout to be heard, but that is just how it is here. It is a solid, no-nonsense place to work.
