M P Jain & Co has been operating out of Godiji Chawl for a good long while now. We are at room 205 in Gulal Wadi. If you know this area at all, you know it’s crowded and full of life from morning until night. It’s the kind of place where everyone knows what their neighbor is having for lunch because the walls are thin and the doors are always open. Our office isn’t much to look at, just a solid door and some old wooden furniture that has seen better days. We’ve got stacks of ledgers and papers because that’s just the nature of the work we do here. It’s not a place for someone who wants air conditioning and quiet. We have the ceiling fans going full speed most of the year just to keep the air moving. People come in and out all day long. Sometimes it’s a client, sometimes it’s just someone from the next room over looking for a matchbox or a bit of advice. We don't do things the modern way with fancy apps for everything; we still like our pens and physical records. It feels more secure that way for us. The walls could probably use a new coat of paint, but we never seem to find the time to stop everything and get it done. We’re too busy keeping up with the daily tasks. Living and working in a chawl teaches you how to get along with everyone. There’s a sense of community here that you don’t find in big office complexes.
