M. L. Bhuwania & Co

M. L. Bhuwania & Co has its office in the Dahanukar Building. We are up on the 5th floor at 480 Kalbadevi Road. Being in Mumbai, especially in a place like Kalbadevi, means it is always noisy. You can hear the horns and the shouting from the street even all the way up here. The building is one of those older ones with high ceilings and heavy doors. We spend most of our time at our desks surrounded by stacks of paper. It’s not a flashy place. We have old wooden cabinets and some fans that have been humming for years. We do a lot of counting and checking of records. It’s quiet inside the office compared to the street. People come up the stairs or use the old lift to visit us. Most of them are people we’ve known for decades. We drink a lot of tea while we work through the ledgers. It gets quite humid during the monsoon, and the walls feel a bit damp sometimes. We don't have a big marketing department or anything like that. We just have our names on the door and our work to do. Every evening, we lock up and join the crowd heading back to the station. It’s a long day, but it’s a living. We’ve been in this same spot for so long that the building feels like a second home. The 5th floor gives us a bit of a view, though it’s mostly just other rooftops.
