People often miss the gate when they drive down S V Road because the traffic in Malad West is just so heavy these days. We have been here at Konjeng Leikai School for a while now, right in the middle of all that noise and bustle. Every morning, the watchman opens up the main entrance early, usually before the first bus even rattles past. It is not a huge place, just a regular building where kids come to sit and learn their lessons. The desks are a bit old, and sometimes the fans make a clicking sound that you just get used to after a few minutes. We spend most of the day making sure the registers are marked and the blackboards are wiped clean for the next teacher. Sometimes the rain hits the roof so hard during the monsoon that we have to talk a bit louder just to be heard over the drumming on the tiles. Parents drop their children off near the side of the road, and there is always a bit of a rush around eight o'clock. We don't have fancy carpets or glass walls here. It is just a place with sturdy walls and plenty of books. Usually, by the afternoon, the sun hits the front windows and we have to pull the curtains. It is just how things go here in Mumbai. We just keep the gates open and wait for the bell to ring at the end of the day.
