Our shop is tucked into Kandivali West, specifically over in Shreeji Darshan on S.M. Road. Dealing in steel means things are usually quite heavy and a bit loud when we’re moving stuff around. The space isn't huge, so we have to be pretty careful about how we stack the rods and sheets. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting and checking measurements. Most mornings start with a look at what needs to go out and what just arrived from the larger yards. The neighborhood is mostly residential around us, so we try not to make too much noise too early. It's funny how much steel people actually need for small things, like window grills or little repairs. We’ve got a small desk where the paperwork sits, though it’s usually buried under some samples or a measuring tape. Sometimes the traffic on S.M. Road makes it hard for the delivery vans to pull up, but we manage somehow. It’s just me and a few others here most days. We drink a lot of chai and talk about the price of metal which seems to change every time we look. It’s a straightforward way to earn a living. No one wears a suit here. We’re mostly in old clothes that can handle a few scratches from the metal edges. It's just a regular local steel business. The rain sounds like a drum on the metal roof during the monsoon, making it almost impossible to hear the phone ringing.
