You can find J D Steel over in Parel, at the Umergaon Building which is numbers 119-21 on Dr Ambedkar road. We are in the Munekolala area and it is a heavy-duty kind of place. We handle a lot of steel products, so the shop always has that cold, metallic smell to it. There are stacks of rods, sheets, and various steel fittings all over the floor. It is a bit of a workout moving this stuff around every day. We don't have a showroom with bright lights. It is more of a warehouse feel where we keep the inventory ready for builders and contractors. The noise of the traffic on Dr Ambedkar road is constant, and we often have to shout a bit to be heard over the trucks. We use old scales for weighing things and write out receipts by hand. It is a no-nonsense environment where we focus on getting the right pieces cut or loaded onto the tempo. Sometimes we have to move things out onto the sidewalk just to get to the back of the pile. It is hard on the back, but we have gotten used to it over the years. We aren't trying to be fancy, just providing steel to the people who are building things in this part of Mumbai. The walls are a bit scuffed from moving metal, but that is part of the job.
