We spend most of our time here at 3 Goregaon Dayaram Compound surrounded by cardboard boxes and rolls of tape. Moving is a messy business and we have seen it all, from overstuffed apartments to small offices. It is not glamorous work by any means. We show up, we pack the plates in newspaper, and we lug the heavy sofas down the stairs. The stairs are usually narrow and the weather in Mumbai is often too hot, but the trucks have to get loaded one way or another. We have been working out of this spot for a good while now. Our days start early when the traffic is a bit lighter. Sometimes people have way more stuff than they said on the phone, which makes the job longer. We just get on with it. We handle the bubble wrap and the crates. It is just a few of us here doing the physical labor every day. We know these Goregaon streets pretty well by now. There is no big corporate structure here, just guys who know how to lift things without hurting their backs too much. We focus on getting the boxes from point A to point B. It is loud and dusty in the yard sometimes. We keep the trucks running and the packing supplies stocked up for the next call that comes in. It is simple work, really.
