H H Mehta & Co has been operating out of Kalbadevi for quite a long time now. We’re tucked away on the 4th Cross, 1st Stage, at number 3. It’s one of those parts of town where everybody seems to be in a hurry. Our office is pretty traditional. We have heavy wooden desks and filing cabinets that have seen better days. We do a lot of paperwork here. It’s mostly accounting and trade stuff, the kind of things that require a lot of focus and a sharp pencil. My father started this, and now I’m the one keeping it going. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s steady. The street outside is always noisy with carts and people shouting, but once you step inside, it gets a bit quieter. We have a small window that looks out onto the alley. Not much of a view, but it lets in some light during the morning hours. We drink a lot of tea while we go through the books. Sometimes the electricity goes out for an hour, and we just sit and talk about the old days until it comes back on. We don't use much technology, just the basics to get the job done. Customers come to us because they’ve known our family for years. We don't need to put up big posters or anything. People just know where we are. It’s a small operation, just a few of us making sure the numbers add up. That’s really all there is to it. We close up exactly at six and head home. It’s been the same routine for decades, and we don't see any reason to change it now.
