Guruji Steel

Down in Kurla West, near the Lokhandwala area of Andheri, you will find our steel yard. It is a noisy place with the sound of metal clanging against metal all day long. We have stacks of steel rods and sheets everywhere and you have to be careful where you walk so you don't trip over something. The air is always a bit dusty and it smells like iron and grease. We spend our days cutting pieces to size and loading them onto trucks that struggle to get through the narrow Kurla streets. It is heavy work and we are usually tired by the time the sun goes down. We don’t have a polished showroom because this is a working yard, not a boutique. Most of the people who come here are builders or people doing their own house repairs. They know what they want and we just get it for them without too much talk. Sometimes the weather makes things difficult, like when it rains and everything gets slippery and messy. We just keep our heads down and get the orders filled. It’s not the kind of job where you wear a suit, that’s for sure. We have been part of this industrial area for a good while and we know the other shop owners around us. It is a tough business but it’s our business. We just do the work and go home. Metal is all we know.
