Gopal Nivas is one of those old buildings on Princess Street that has seen a lot of history. We are at number 127, and the stairs are a bit steep if you are not used to them. This part of Mumbai is always packed with people and carts delivering goods. Our office is a bit cramped, filled with wooden cabinets that are overflowing with files and old records. We deal with a lot of different products, so there is always something new to sort through. The ceiling fans hum constantly to keep the air moving, and you can hear the constant honking from the street below. We have a small window that looks out onto the neighboring building's wall, so not much of a view, but it lets in a little light. Most of the people working here have been with us for years. We know each other's families and what everyone likes for their morning tea. We don't have a website that does much, and our office doesn't look like those modern ones you see in magazines. It is just a place where we do our business, write out our ledgers, and talk to our customers. Sometimes the phone lines go down when it rains heavily, but we just wait for the repairman and carry on with whatever else needs doing. It is a traditional way of working, I suppose. The wooden floorboards creak when you walk on them, but they have held up for a long time.
