Bharat J Shah

My business is located at the Damji Godown in Devi Gally. It is situated right across from the Devi Mandir and very near to the Carnac Masjid. This is a very old and traditional part of the town. Bharat J Shah is the name you will find on all our official records. Working out of a godown means that my day is all about storage, checking inventory, and moving goods in and out. It is definitely not a fancy office with air conditioning or glass partitions. It is a place where physical work actually happens every day. The streets around here are extremely narrow, so getting the delivery trucks in and out is always a big challenge for us. I have been working in this spot for decades now. I think I know every single corner and every face in this gully. The atmosphere here is very traditional and lively. On any given day, you can hear the bells ringing from the mandir and the calls coming from the masjid at the same time. It is a real mix of everything. I keep a very close eye on all the stock we have. It is mostly just me and a couple of regular helpers who have been working with me since they were very young. We don’t use computers for every single thing; a lot of our records are still kept in the big paper registers. It is the way I have always done things and it works for me. It is a bit dusty and cramped.
