Anil Traders is situated at 201/19 on Bhandari Cross Lane, right off Nagdevi Street. If you’ve ever been to Nagdevi, you know how packed the lanes are with shops and people carrying boxes. Our shop is quite small and filled from floor to ceiling with stock. We have ladders leaning against the walls so we can reach the items on the top shelves. It’s an old building, so the walls are thick and the doorways are a bit narrow. We spend a lot of time talking to customers who squeeze into the small space at the front. It gets very busy in the mornings when the new stock arrives. We have to move quickly to get everything inside before we block the lane too much. The air smells like metal and cardboard most of the time. There is a small stool behind the counter where someone usually sits to write out the bills by hand. We don't have a computer system for that; we prefer using the old paper books. Sometimes the electricity goes out for an hour or two, so we just use the light from the street. It’s a very traditional way of doing business, but it has worked for us for a long time. The tea seller comes by every few hours, and that’s usually when we take a short break. It’s a crowded, noisy, and lively place to work every single day.
