Alpha Batteries is tucked away in the Kalpak building, unit A16, on S N Road in Antop Hill. It’s a small shop but it’s usually packed with batteries of all shapes and sizes. You can smell the lead and the acid sometimes when you walk in. We spend most of our time testing old batteries or charging up new ones for people in the neighborhood. It’s a lot of heavy lifting, as you can imagine, since batteries aren't exactly light. My back usually aches by the end of the day from moving them around. We don't have a showroom or anything like that. It’s just a workshop where we get things done. People come in when their cars won't start or their backup systems fail, and we see what we can do to help. Antop Hill is a busy residential and commercial mix, so we get a lot of local walk-ins. The shop is a bit dark because of all the shelving, but we know our way around. It’s a simple business, really. We just focus on keeping the power going for people. Sometimes it gets messy with the cables and the testers lying around on the floor. We try to keep it tidy but it never stays that way for long. Every day is pretty much the same, just checking voltages and making sure everything is working right so people can get back to their normal routines.
