We set up Dighe Bamboo Farmerproducer Companylimited here in Kamal Nagar. It’s located at Sarva Seva Sangh, and you can usually find Santosh Narayan Dighe around if you need to talk to someone. We deal mostly with bamboo because that's what grows well in this area and it’s what we know. A group of us farmers got together to make this work. We didn't want to rely on big companies so we started our own thing. It's not a big operation with lots of employees. It is just a handful of local people who understand how much work goes into growing and selling bamboo. Our office is simple, just part of the house really at Survey Number 3. We spend a lot of time out where the plants are. It gets dusty and hot, but that’s just how it is. Sometimes we meet under the trees or in the small office space we have. There isn't any corporate talk here. We just discuss what's happening with the harvest and how to get things to market. Dealing with the weather and the soil is a full-time job. We started this company to give us a bit more control over our own crops. People in the neighborhood know where to find us if they have questions about bamboo or want to join in. It’s a local effort, nothing more and nothing less. We just keep our heads down and work.
